Why do socks disappear when you do the laundry? Is there some magical place we can only dream about? I get so frustrated when I do laundry and end up with mismatched socks. I feel as though I always have a huge pile of socks that have lost their mate.
Sure, you can set your socks aside and hope that their match shows up one day. You could also start using a laundry hack that I came up with that will keep you from losing them to begin with. I came up with this hack after battling the lost sock demon for years. After all, a family of six means a lot of potential socks to lose!
Read on for a wonderful laundry hack that will keep you from losing socks once and for all. I’ve also included how you can stop damaging your delicate undergarments. You simply need an unused pillowcase for this trick.
Sort the laundry
After you collect all of the clothes you plan to wash, sort them. I sort mine between colors, towels, blacks, and whites. You may wish to wash a load every single day or leave the laundry for one day a week. Whatever is easier for you, go for it!
Separate the delicates
Once you have all of the clothes you are about to wash, separate them. This is the hack that will leave you curious as to why you didn’t do it sooner! Take out socks, bras, slips, underwear, and camisoles and place them into a clean pillowcase.
Now, tie a knot at the top of the pillowcase. The knot will save everything from coming out of the pillowcase as it is being washed. It will also help your bras and slips from becoming damaged in the wash, as clips often get snagged on other items during the cycle.
Wash and dry your clothes
After all of the items are in the pillowcase, add detergent and start the machine. When it is done, unload the washer and place it all in the dryer. Don’t open the pillowcase. That will only increase the chances that some of the items, including socks, will become lost in the process.
When everything is dry, fold the loose items first. Then, open up your pillowcase on a flat surface. Your socks should all match! It’s also easier to find smaller items, such as underwear and camisoles, when you leave them in the pillowcase.
Keep your tools close
Always keep a designated pillowcase nearby for when you need to wash a load of socks or clothes. You can also use this hack if you are washing your bedsheets. Store the pillowcase close to your washing machine so that you don’t have to go searching for it when you are ready to do laundry.
Use a pillowcase for shoes
Do you have a dirty pair of shoes that you would like to wash but are afraid to? You may be worried about the inside of your washing machine getting too dirty from your shoes banging against the sides. A pillowcase will also work in this instance. Simply tie them up the same way in a pillowcase and throw them in the washing machine. You may also wish to leave them in the pillowcase if you are planning to dry them in the dryer.
Don’t you wish that you knew these hacks years ago? By following this simple pillowcase trick, you’ll keep all of your socks together every single time. Don’t go crazy messing with mismatched socks when there is an easy way to keep everything together once and for all!
